Method
- Lay out four slices of bread on a cutting board. Spread about 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of Nutella on each slice, leaving about a quarter-inch border around the edges.
- Place another slice of bread on top of each Nutella-covered slice, Nutella-side facing down. Gently press the edges together to form four sandwich pairs without squeezing out the filling.
- Brush softened butter over the top and bottom of each sandwich using a pastry brush or the back of a clean spoon. Add a light dusting of sea salt on one side if desired.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes. Place the buttered sandwiches in the air fryer basket in a single layer, working in batches if needed.
- Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, checking at the 12-minute mark. The pies are ready when the bread is golden brown at the edges and slightly firm on top, while the inside still gives a little.
- Let the toast pies sit for 2 to 3 minutes before eating so the Nutella cools from molten-hot to warm and gooey.
Notes
Do not spread Nutella all the way to the edges; leave about a quarter-inch border to help prevent leaking. If the Nutella is cold and thick, microwave it for about 10 seconds to soften slightly. Preheat the air fryer for best crisping. Thinner sandwich bread cooks faster, while thicker bread like brioche or Texas toast may need 2–3 extra minutes. Let the pies cool for 2–3 minutes before eating because the filling will be very hot. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 325°F for 3–4 minutes. Uncooked assembled sandwiches can be frozen for up to 1 month and cooked from frozen with 3–5 extra minutes added.
